City officials on Thursday afternoon will consider final approval of a new director of Columbus Parks and Recreation.

Columbus Parks and Recreation board members take action on the appointment at 4 p.m. in the council chambers at Columbus City Hall.

Former parks director Mark Jones in July announced that he would resign effective Sept. 4 after nearly 29 years of public service to pursue new professional opportunities, city officials said.

Since then, parks’ current assistant directors and staff have been leading ongoing operations.

The appointment comes shortly after the official completion of NexusPark and the Circle K Fieldhouse, which city officials hope will become a vibrant destination for recreation, wellness and sports tourism.

The final portion of the NexusPark campus — Midtown Greene — was finished in July.
