COLUMBUS, Ind. — Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies are continuing an investigation into a collision involving multiple vehicles and a school bus that occurred at about 3:45 p.m. at South Heights Court and State Street.

The bus, which was No. 204, was transporting Columbus East High School students home when the accident occurred and one student complained of pain following the accident, and was transported to the hospital for treatment, according to the sheriff’s office. BCSC officials said his family was notified. Another bus was sent to transport the remainder of the students home. There were 29 students on the bus when the accident occurred, deputies said.

Preliminary investigation indicates the bus was stopped at the intersection, heading eastbound and a car approached from the opposite direction, the driver stopping in anticipation that the bus stop arm was about to go out. The bus arm was not out when the driver stopped, according to deputies, but the bus driver told investigators it was about to be deployed when the accident occurred.

A vehicle behind that driver who had stopped then rear-ended the first vehicle, pushing the first vehicle into the bus, according to investigators, who said the second driver was caught off-guard by the first vehicle stopping. The driver whose vehicle was rear-ended was also transported to the hospital for treatment, investigators said.

No serious injuries were reported.

The Indiana State Police were also called to inspect the bus as part of the investigation.
