BLOOMFIELD — South Decatur was within 21-20 entering the fourth quarter Friday, but Eastern Greene scored a pair of touchdowns to pull away for a 34-20 victory in the opening round of a Class A sectional.
The Cougars (3-6) trailed 14-7 at halftime before Josh Winkler returned the second-half kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown. Eastern Greene answered with a quick score to go back ahead 21-14, but Jayden Jackson-Ray returned the ensuing kickoff 64 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was wide left, leaving the Thunderbirds with a 21-20 lead.
Eastern Greene (2-8) then was able to shut out South Decatur over the final 20 minutes.
Jackson-Ray scored the Cougars’ first touchdown on a 1-yard run that tied the game at 7-7 midway through the second quarter.
