HOPE — Hauser put itself in great position to earn a massive win over Shawe Memorial in a non-conference girls basketball game Tuesday night.
In the second half, however, the Hilltoppers put the pieces together, and Hauser couldn’t put together enough offense in the second half and fell 43-37.
Shawe was without its best player in senior Audrey Barron, who averaged 24 points per game last year and is nearly at 30 points per game this season. The Hilltoppers had a hard time finding out who was going to pick up the scoring slack, but had just enough to get the win.
The Jets had their best quarter in the second when they held Shawe to only one point defensively and totaled 19 points on the offensive end to lead 23-14 at half after trailing 13-6 after the first quarter. Hauser couldn’t keep the momentum to start the third quarter.
“Coming out at halftime, we talked about doing similar things. If they were going to adjust, we would adjust right back,” Hauser coach Kyle Shipp said. “We didn’t have much in the second half offensively. When you’re getting stops, you got to be able to convert on the other end. They were going to make a basket or two eventually, so that’s what it came down to.”
Brylee Liter and Juliet Gardner both scored in double figures for the Hilltoppers with 22 and 10 points, respectively.
Kennedy Konradi led the Jets (8-2) with 14 points. Braelyn Williams finished with eight, and June Berkenstock added seven.
Hauser has two big Mid-Hoosier Conference games coming up, both on the road. They begin with South Decatur on Thursday, and then travel to Edinburgh Dec. 19.
“We’re definitely continuing to get better,” Shipp said. “This was a good learning experience for some of our kids that put themselves in a good atmosphere of a big game against a sectional opponent, somebody that has been there and done that, so credit to what they did. They battled through adversity, and they were very well coached. They were well executed and made adjustments. We got to go back to practice and get better.”
