Warming centers offered in Columbus, Hope

Bartholomew County and Columbus will open warming centers as arctic cold arrives this weekend following tonight’s predicted snowfall.

The Bartholomew County Public Library, 536 Fifth St., Columbus, will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Hope Branch of the Bartholomew County Public Library, 635 Harrison St., Hope, will be open Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

At the library locations, no animal crates will be available and only service animals are allowed in the buildings.

Brighter Days, 421 S. Mapleton St., Columbus, will be open from 6 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday, and 5 p.m. Sunday to 8 a.m. Monday. No animal crates will be available and only service animals are allowed in the building. Transport will be provided on Sunday morning, Sunday evening, and Monday morning between Brighter Days and The Community Engagement Center.

The Community Engagement Center, 1075 Second St., Columbus, is closed Saturday, but will be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.

Food, showers and areas for sleep are not available at any of these locations and city and county officials ask that those using the warming centers respect the rules of the facility and other individuals who are there.

Weather conditions will be monitored to determine if dates for the warming centers need to be extended.
