Looking Back – Dec. 16

Two-year-old Erin French gets a boost from Callie Bowerly, 11, in putting her ornament on the Christmas tree in the yard of the Jennings County Courthouse in Vernon on Dec. 16, 1975. The two children, both of Vernon, and several other county children helped decorate a large, live pine tree in the courthouse yard during a tree decorating party.

2015

The $5 million Annex student housing complex near the Columbus Learning Center was about half full in its first semester of operation. The complex opened with high anticipation in May after an initial commitment from Cummins Inc. that its interns would lease the beds over the summer.

2000

Fire Marshal Gary Henderson replaced Gary Burriss as Columbus Fire Chief after Burriss’ resignation. Henderson was sworn in about an hour after Burriss left the building.

1975

The Bartholomew County Commissioners gave the Bartholomew County Historical Society approval to proceed with the paperwork required to place the courthouse on the National Registry of Historic Places.
