Carol Jean (Romine) Wertz, 83, of Franklin, IN passed away on Friday, December 12, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on April 7, 1942, in Columbus, IN to Harold Romine and Frances (Hall) Romine. Carol married Donald Wertz on September 16, 1962, in Columbus, IN.

She was a 1960 graduate of Columbus High School in Columbus, IN and went on to attend Murray State College in Murray, KY, where she graduated in 1965. Carol received her master’s degree from Indiana University in 1977.

She had been an elementary school teacher for the Franklin Community School Corporation for 26 years, retiring in 2002.

Carol was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Franklin, the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, the Johnson County Historical Society, Hillview Country Club, and the Franklin Women’s Study Club.

She enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, playing golf, and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include her husband Donald Wertz of Franklin, IN; two sons Eric Wertz of Noblesville, IN and Bryan Wertz of Franklin, IN; four grandchildren Phillip Wertz of Columbus, OH, Loganne Wertz of Terre Haute, IN, Caleb Wertz (Sierra Sanchez) of Franklin, IN, and Sam Noa (formerly known as Hailey Wertz) of Franklin, IN; and sister Judith Walters of Hartsville, IN.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother Gene Romine in 1938.

Rafael Sanchez will conduct a celebration of life memorial service on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at 2PM at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN and will be live-streamed at www.swartzmortuary.com/obituary/carolwertz. Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, from 4PM until 8PM at the mortuary.

A private family inurnment will take place at Greenlawn Cemetery.
