New officer joins Columbus Police Department

Gurkins

Columbus Mayor Mary Ferdon swore in CPD’s newest police officer, Joshua Gurkins (CPD 311) at Columbus City Hall on Monday.

Gurkins is originally from North Carolina. He joined the U.S. Army shortly after high school and served as a military police officer for five years. After moving to Indiana, he worked in the security field until he began working for Johnson County Community Corrections in 2020. Gurkin also obtained his associate’s degree in criminal justice from Daymar College the same year. He then joined the Marion County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy before getting hired as a police officer with Martinsville Police Department in 2023, where he was employed until starting with CPD.

Gurkins is the first officer CPD has hired under our new lateral officer program, which allows for up to eight years of full-time police officer experience to be considered for longevity pay and paid time off.

He will begin training immediately with CPD instructors before starting the field training program.
