Auditions to be held in February for MRTC production of “Shakespeare’s Power Play”

Mill Race Theatre Company is holding auditions for an upcoming performance of “Shakespeare’s Power Play,” an accessible and fast-paced evening of curated scenes and monologues exploring power in all forms, according to Mill Race Theatre Company marketing committee member Allison Kunkler.

Auditions will be held on Feb. 2 and Feb. 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Columbus East High School, room C110. People may enter through the T doors on the north end of the building. Parking is available in the bus lot off of Marr Road.

The full company meeting will be held on Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. Rehearsals will take place at 6 to 9 p.m. all nights from Feb. 9 to Feb. 12, Feb. 16 to Feb. 19 and Feb. 23 to Feb. 26.

Those auditioning are welcome to bring a prepared Shakespeare monologue, a favorite poem or nothing at all. The audition team will also be there to guide anyone who feels stepping onstage is the hardest part. Grammar rules are optional too.

A selection of monologues and audition scenes may be provided at auditions. Those auditioning are asked to only attend one night. Mill Race Theatre Company encourages performers of all backgrounds, experience levels and comfort levels with Shakespeare to attend.

“Shakespeare’s Power Play” is Shakespeare without the intimidation and is designed especially for first-time Shakespeare performers and audiences. It pulls from several of the playwright’s most compelling works, from Hamlet to Romeo and Juliet to Macbeth and more.

From kings and soldiers to wives and parents, it examines who holds power, who seeks it and what it costs, Kunkler said. The play is appropriate for all audiences and celebrates curiosity, courage and the joy of storytelling.

Performances of “Shakespeare’s Power Play” will be held on Feb. 27, Feb. 28 and March 1.
