HOPE — Hope firefighters, along with numerous other fire departments, were sent to a detached garage structure fire at 11:34 a.m. Tuesday in the 7600 block of North County Road 1000E.
Crews encountered heavy fire at the scene and there were concerns about a large amount of ammunition that was stored inside the structure, which began to discharge during the fire, firefighters said.
According to firefighters, one casing landed on Engine 11, near a pump operator.
Prior to firefighters arriving, Hope police officers rescued two dogs from the structure and the pets were not injured.
No injuries were reported. The structure was reported as a total loss.
Assisting at the scene were Clifford Volunteer Fire Department, Clay Township Fire Department, Hartsville Volunteer Fire Department, Burney Clay Township Volunteer Fire Department, Columbus Township Fire and Rescue, Letts Community Volunteer Fire Department and Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office.
