John and Angelica Byrum grab a moment’s rest after gathering gifts from about 50 merchants and businessmen on Jan. 22, 1976. The Byrum’s daughter, Kathleen, born at 3:57 a.m. New Year’s Day, was the first baby born in Bartholomew County in 1976, thus winning the “First Baby Contest.”

Toyota Material Handling U.S.A., headquartered in Columbus, earned the Most Valuable Supplier Award for 2016, granted by the industry’s Material Handling Equipment Distributors Association.

2001

Nicole Brown, Bobbie Jo Norris, Lindsey Mathis, Hannah Roney, Angela Coffman, Loretta Mize, Tara Williams, Mark Presto, Braedon Engle and Brittney Watson, a group of Central Middle School seventh- and eighth-graders, won the annual Tobacco Awareness Action Team Video Contest with their 60-second video.

1976

New York Times architectural critic Paul Goldberger arrived in Columbus to write a story for the Times Magazine, which would include pictures of Mt. Healthy Elementary School, the Cummins Walesboro plant and City Hall.
