Letter: U.S. democracy is in crisis

Our democracy is in crisis. We’re polarized and allow money to dominate both parties. Truth is obscured by many media hacks creating outrage. Power is grabbed by one level of government from another. Court appointments are more political than ever. GDP and the stock market may be high, but the share captured for the top 20% is greater than ever. Many Christians look the other way if convenient. We’re no longer an example for aspiring nations the way we once were. Long term allies resist our bullying antics.

How long can this go on?

Many of us wonder if the administration in Washington will honor our midterm elections. Would the last national election have been honored if it had gone differently?

Wake up! An old saying says if we have one bad cop but 99 good cops who remain silent to protect the bad one, then we actually have 100 bad cops. The same is true with leaders and politicians.

Many local leaders and politicians are honest, but we need honest recognition of our situation and courageous leadership. The silence of our local leaders regarding the authoritarian-like administration in Washington continues to be deafening. It’s our responsibility to correct our direction before it’s too late. It’s 15 minutes before midnight; not “Morning in America” as Ronald Reagan once proclaimed. Francine Prose recently wrote “It feels like we’re on the brink of an authoritarian takeover.” I fear the same thing.
