Clayton McCray, 91, of Columbus passed from this life on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at 10:04 a.m. at his home.

Born in Whitesburg, Kentucky, on February 20, 1934, the son of Tandy and Lucinda Combs McCray.

His life took a turn of joyous companionship when he married the love of his life, Mary E. Cooper, on March 8, 1958. Together, they created not just a family home but a legacy of warmth and wisdom.

He leaves behind a flourishing tree of life with his children, Janet (Jerry) Lancaster of Columbus, Randy (Dottie) McCray of Hudson, Florida, and Richard (Heather) McCray of Columbus; 13 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Alberta McCray of Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews, will hold dear the memory of his steadfast presence.

Mr. McCray was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary McCray, who passed on April 3, 2023; his brothers, Clyde, Clifford, and Clinton McCray; and a grandson, Bobby McCray.

Mr. McCray blessed the community with his spiritual dedication as a preacher for Franklin Road Church of Christ, touching countless lives with his heartfelt sermons. His professional journey saw him providing steadfast service at Arvin Industries before embracing his career at Cummins Engine Company, from which he retired after many fulfilling years.

His intellect and curiosity for learning were evident from an early age, as he attended the Kentucky School for the Deaf and later the Indiana School for the Deaf in Indianapolis. His passion for education and his commitment to the deaf community shone brightly as he spent many years as a director for the deaf camp. Mr. McCray found solace and joy in woodworking and gardening, and the craft of carpentry work which he skillfully executed on the side.

The words that best encapsulate the essence of Mr. Clayton McCray are simply “loving and a man with a servant’s heart.” His presence was a sanctuary of affection, and his actions a testament to steadfast love.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Barkes, Weaver &Glick Funeral Home on Jonathan Moore Pike with Jerry Lancaster officiating. Family and friends may gather for visitation from 11:00 a.m. till time of service at the funeral home.

Private burial will take place at Brown County Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Franklin Road Church of Christ.
