North junior headed back to state after win in 200 IM

ST. LEON — Mridula Muthukumaran defended her sectional title in the 200-yard individual medley and will make a return trip to the Girls Swimming State Finals.

The Columbus North junior swam 2 minutes, 11.30 seconds Saturday at East Central, nearly five seconds faster than her time from Thursday’s prelims. She will compete in the state prelims Friday at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Muthukumaran also was the defending sectional champion in the 100 butterfly, but finished third in that event Saturday in 59.36. Cora Tregoning placed fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:04.30) and fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:39:05), and Abby Proffitt took fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:33.89). Caroline Crawford was seventh in the 100 backstroke (1:07.16).

Muthukumaran, Advika Badve, Brooklyn Pendleton and Proffitt finished third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:45.86). Badve, Tregoning, Muthukumaran and Proffitt took fourth in the 200 medley relay (1:56.98). Tregoning, Crawford, Ell Maignan and Carolina Bologna were fifth in the 400 freestyle relay (4:01.11).

The Bull Frogs finished third overall as a team. Bloomington South won with 513 to 382 for East Central, 262 for North, 241 for Edgewood and 212 for Bloomington North.
