Michael Steven Gabriel passed from this life on Tuesday February 3, 2026 at Vivera Assisted Living facility surrounded by family and his favorite caregiver, Pat (Patty) at Vivera where he made his home after declining health battling cancer.
Steve, known as “Chumley” by the Hope community where he was a lifetime resident was born July 5, 1951 to Joseph and Jannie (Skorupa) Gabriel.
After graduating from Hauser High School in 1969, Steve worked at Cummins, the former Cross Cliff Elementary School as a custodian and upon retirement was employed as a security guard at Shelbyville Casino. In his younger years Steve enjoyed coaching little league baseball and enjoyed discussing baseball with his friends at Vivera.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Jerry, Donald, James and infant Frankie; sisters Fonda Faye Rose, Barbara West and betty Artis.
He is survived by sisters, Evelyn (Farrell) Axsom, Shirley (Jack) Holmes and Debra Jo Gabriel, all of Columbus.
A visitation to celebrate Steve’s life will be Tuesday February 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Norman Funeral Home in Hope. A private family burial of his cremains will be Wednesday February 19 at Haw Creek Cemetery.
