Athletes of the Week

Colin McMahon

MALE

Colin McMahon // Columbus East junior wrestler

McMahon won his first three matches before falling in the 190-pound final at Saturday’s Evansville Semistate to help lead the Olympians to a fourth-place team finish.

His performance last week: “I think I went out there, and I did a lot. I think there’s always room for improvement, but I’ve been working on being a lot more thankful this year. It really helps take the pressure off, and I’m seeing the results from it. I’m really enjoying it this year”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I do a lot of praying and hang out with my family. I don’t want to treat it as anything out of this world. It’s just a game at the end of the day, and it helps me prepare just treating it as a game.”

Favorite drink: “In-season, I drink a lot of electrolytes like Propel, but out-of-season, I drink Diet Dr. Pepper.”

Favorite food: “I like barbecued ribs a lot, but also a burger.”

Favorite class: “I’m taking Pre-Calculus right now, and I like that a lot. It’s super interesting, and I like math.”

Favorite sports team: “I like watching Penn State and Iowa State wrestling, and the IU football team was crazy to watch this year.”

Favorite athlete: “(Ohio State wrestler) Jesse Mendez.”

Role model: “My dad (Paul McMahon). I look up to him a lot.”

Best advice: “Everything you do, you just have to enjoy it because there’s always somewhere worse that you could be. So wherever you are, you should be thankful for it. Whatever you do is an opportunity, and you just have to see it as such.”

Athletics goal: “Just become the best version of myself I possibly can — the best wrestler, the best athlete, the best Christian, the best person I possibly can.”

If you could travel anywhere: “If I could go back to Florida with all my friends, that was probably the most fun trip I’ve ever been on.”

FEMALE

Mridula Muthukumaran // Columbus North junior swimmer

Mridula Muthukumaran

Muthukumaran finished 26th in the preliminaries of the 200-yard individual medley Friday at the Girls Swimming and Diving State Finals.

Her performance last week: “I’m really happy with how I did. The time that I had was about what I thought I would get. I felt really good going into state, and I’m happy to finish off the season in such a good way.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I just kind of make sure that I have a good routine and make sure I get enough sleep and make sure I get my work for school done ahead of time so I can be rested for the meet.”

Favorite drink: “I really like Watermelon Lemonade from Chili’s.”

Favorite food: “I’m a big fan of pasta.”

Favorite class: “I really enjoy all my science classes, and I like the C4 Medical Pathway class that I take.”

Favorite sports team: “University of Virginia and University of Texas women’s swimming.”

Favorite athlete: “(Olympic and former Virginia swimmer) Gretchen Walsh”

Role model: “Katie Ledecky. She just really inspires me with everything that she’s done for the sport.”

Best advice: “Have fun in whatever you do. It’s important that no matter what you, have fun and trust the process because you never know what the outcome is going to be.”

Athletics goal: “To be able to swim either D-II or D-III in college and make it onto the Olympic team.”

If you could travel anywhere: “Paris. It’s just always been a place I’ve wanted to go. I’ve always liked fashion designing, and Paris is one of the key cities for fashion designing.”
