BEECH GROVE — An officer with the Beech Grove Police Department died Monday after being shot while investigating a domestic disturbance at an apartment on Diplomat Court.
Indiana State Police said Beech Grove officers were sent to the disturbance just after 6 p.m. Monday and encountered subjects involved in the disturbance at the doorway to the apartment. At the doorway, a a fired shots at the officers from inside the residence state police said.
Two officers sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to an area hospital. Despite life saving efforts, Officer Bryan Elliott succumbed to his wounds at the hospital. The second officer is in stable condition.
The suspect fled the immediate area on foot. For several hours, officers from multiple agencies searched the area. At approximately 10:17 p.m. the suspect was taken into custody by members of the IMPD SWAT Team at a different apartment building in the same area as the incident. The suspect was identified as 47 year old Kenneth T. Johnson.
The investigation into the circumstances of this incident is ongoing, the Indiana State Police is leading the investigation with support from IMPD. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
