RENO, NEVADA
Glen Douglas Voelz, known to family and friends as “Doug,” passed away on February 26, 2026, in Reno, Nevada. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Doug was born on June 22, 1944, in Columbus, Indiana, to Norma Rose (Davis) (Tatem) Voelz. He possessed a Midwestern warmth and dependability and was friendly to the core. Doug had a natural gift for making everyone around him feel welcome and comfortable, and he made lasting friendships from his years raising a family in Ohio to his decades in Sparks, where he later called home.
Doug’s greatest pride was his family. On June 18, 1966, he married the love of his life, Carol Ann Carroll, beginning a partnership that would span decades, meeting life’s challenges and celebrating its joys side by side. Together they raised two sons, Glenn and Scott. He was a constant presence for his boys, showing up for swim meets, tennis matches, award ceremonies, and graduations. As the family grew, Doug became a proud grandfather to John, Grace, Esi, and Mansah. There was little in life that made him happier than spending time with his beloved grandchildren.
After graduating from Ohio University in 1967, Doug taught high school math in rural southeastern Ohio. After a time working in university administration, he transitioned into the financial industry, where he built a respected career with The Ohio Company and later as a financial advisor for Edward Jones in Sparks for over two decades. He was the kind of person that clients and colleagues could always count on: knowledgeable, trustworthy, and genuinely invested in the well-being of those he served.
Doug was actively involved in the community, serving for years on the City of Sparks Regional Planning Commission, the Sparks Sertoma Club, and the Northern Nevada Community Housing Resource Board. Outside of work, Doug lived life with a wonderful sense of adventure and community. He loved traveling with Carol Ann, hiking on their favorite trails around White’s Creek and Mt. Rose Meadows, and visiting his children and grandchildren in Los Angeles and Bend, Oregon.
Doug was a competitive swimmer and a longtime member of the Sierra Nevada Masters swim team. Doug competed in the 1964 U.S. Olympic Trials and participated in open-water racing well into his 70s, finishing near the top of his age group in multiple Donner Lake Swim races. Doug was also an avid card player and applied his sharp mathematical mind on the local poker tables.
Doug will be deeply missed by his wife Carol Ann; his sons Glenn (Susan) and Scott (Laurie); his grandchildren John, Grace, Esi, and Mansah; his sisters Jill Sofi and Susan Sabatino; his brother Mike Voelz; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Donna and Stephen Hamilton; and the many friends and neighbors whose lives he touched along the way. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, good humor, and integrity. May he rest in peace.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Eddy House of Reno, Nevada, in Doug’s memory.
