COLUMBUS, Ind. –Indiana State Police troopers from the Versailles Post arrested a 64-year-old New York driver on operating a vehicle while intoxicated and other charges following a traffic stop on I-65 in Bartholomew County.
Shortly after 10:30 a.m. Thursday, a caller reported observing a Volvo semi pulling a trailer driving recklessly on I-65 northbound near the 60 mile marker, near Columbus. Trooper Korry Clark located the semi traveling northbound near the 65 mile marker. The commercial motor vehicle was observed driving recklessly, nearly striking a guardrail.
Clark conducted a traffic stop on the truck on I-65 northbound, just north of exit 68. During the traffic stop, Trooper Jayme Herbert, a certified drug recognition expert, responded to conduct an investigation into the driver of the vehicle, Rodney W. Sanford, 64, North Collins, NY possibly being impaired. A Columbus Police Department K-9 Officer also responded to assist.
Due to the investigation, troopers placed Sanford under arrest for operating while intoxicated. During a search of Sanford’s vehicle, troopers located suspected marijuana, THC gummies, and prescription medications.
Sanford was incarcerated in the Bartholomew County Jail on charges of operating while intoxicated (drugs), operating while intoxicated-endangerment, possession of marijuana, and possession of legend drugs.
31 Wrecker Service responded to take possession of the vehicle and the load of strawberries being transported, state police said.
