Artz Daze event linked to Indiana bicentennial

Call it herd mentality.

The latest Artz Daze craze from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday will link to Indiana’s bicentennial, better known among punsters as the Bison-tennial.

Artz Daze is the Columbus Area Arts Council’s free, monthly, warm-weather art activity meant to help people unwind, beat stress or simply enjoy themselves during a lunch hour or break in front of The Commons, 300 Washington St. in Columbus.

Longtime local artist Marilyn Brackney, who already has spearheaded several Bicentennial Legacy Projects, will help adults make what she is calling Bisontangles. They actually are Zentangles, a relaxing (hence “Zen”) drawing process that uses repetitive patterns to fill a square. The bison, the state symbol of the 200-year celebration, simply will be a mixed-in inspiration for these patterned squares.

Other state symbols such as the cardinal and tulip tree leaf will be used as inspiration, too, Brackney said. She will demonstrate how to fill an 8½-by-11 page with fun patterns and designs in 20 to 30 minutes.

So people can hoof it downtown for a brief respite.

“It’s kind of like doodling inside of shapes,” she said.

Brackney’s background includes similar art such as ink scratches, which she did as a teacher. Zentangles just require a bit of focus.

“You don’t have to have specific talent,” Brackney said. “And you don’t have to be an artist to do it.”

kidscommons children’s museum, 309 Washington St., partners with the arts council in the effort that is sponsored by WellConnect. The museum will offer a children’s activity of making barn quilts, also in front of The Commons. They will consist of paper squares created with a pattern to look like a quilt square.
