Salute to Philharmonic
The Columbus Indiana Philharmonic deserves a round of applause for continuing the tradition of the annual Salute! concert during Memorial Day weekend at the Bartholomew County Memorial for veterans.
The concert, which draws about 2,000 people, has become a significant community event and a tremendous way to recognize past and present military members — with a special emphasis on those who died during service to the United States.
Patriotic songs, talented guest singers and the Philharmonic musicians stir emotions and wonderfully balance the solemn messages and moments of remembrance.
Job well done
Kudos to St. Bartholomew Catholic School for earning a special distinction for the third consecutive school year: Four-star school.
It’s the state’s highest academic honor bestowed by the Indiana Department of Education. The honor signifies excellence in academics leading to high test scores on standardized tests.
The fact that St. Bartholomew has achieved this distinction for three consecutive years is proof that the school’s teachers and students take education seriously and strive for excellence. They are to be commended.
Notable honor
Vaughn Sylva, assistant superintendent for business services at Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. since 2002, was named as the top school business administrator in the state this year by the Indiana Association of School Business Officials during its annual awards banquet.
With 1,240 members representing nearly all Indiana school corporations, this award carries significance — for which Sylva, his school district and school district associates should be proud.
