Local Diesel Workers Union announces scholarship winners
The local Diesel Workers Union (DWU) recently announced the winners of its new scholarship program for DWU family members. The are:
Kaitlin Wagner: Daughter of Benjamin (DWU member) and Benita Wagner. She is a graduating senior at Columbus East High School and will attend Indiana University in Bloomington.
Megan Jaynes: Daughter of Frank (DWU member) and Angela Jaynes. Attends IUPUI.
Anna Gilley: Daughter of Denny (DWU member) and Amber Gilley. Graduating senior at Columbus North High School and will attend IUPUC.
A total of $3,000 was raised by events planned by the union’s sports and recreation committee to fund the first-ever scholarships. Each winner receive a $1,000 scholarship.
The winners were selected by their essays on the topic, “If you had the authority to change your community in a positive way, what specific changes would you make and why?”
IUPUC conducts student research exhibition
The Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC) Office of Student Research hosted an exhibition of projects by student research grant winners April 25 at the Columbus Learning Center.
More than 100 IUPUC students, faculty, staff and community members attended the seventh annual exhibition, which featured 12 students and 11 projects that spanned disciplines and divisions across campus.
Local student research grant winners, and their projects, were:
Columbus
Teresea Higham and Samantha Kohlman: Both pursuing Master of Arts degree in mental health counseling. Teamed on project, titled “Self-Identification of Ethnic Heritage vs. Genetic Ethnic Heritage: Does Knowing One’s Genetic Ethnic Heritage Impact Perception of Self, Others, and Community?”
Sabrina Schipper: Biology major with pre-veterinary and chemistry minor. Project titled “Exploring the geographical range and morphological diversity of the brown small minnow mayfly, Baetis brunneicolor.”
Holly Stockhover: Nursing major. Project titled “Literature Review: Efficacy of Medicinal Marijuana in Children with Dravet Syndrome.”
Carissa Walls: Psychology major with sociology minor. Project titled “Behaviors Preceding Ostracism in Established Play Groups of Children.”
North Vernon
Jessica Caldwell: Studying biology with a chemistry minor. Project titled “The Differential Impact of Chitin and Chitosan on Heavy Metal Pollution in Water Samples.”
Butlerville
Brittany Layman: Studying elementary education with special education concentration. Project titled “An Examination of Pre-Service Teachers’ Beliefs about Classroom Management.”
Students awarded sducator scholarships
Four Bartholomew County students planning to pursue a career in education were among the recipients of this year’s Next Generation Hoosier Educator Scholarship. They are:
Annamarie Ashbrook, Hauser Junior-Senior High School, Ball State University
Grace Hester, Columbus North High School, Taylor University
Adam Ruble, Columbus North High School, Indiana University (Bloomington)
Casey Weisner, Columbus East High School, Ball State University
The scholarship pays $7,500 per year for up to four years to students who obtain their teaching license and commit to teaching in Indiana for five consecutive years. It is available to 200 high-achieving high school and college students who graduate within the top 20 percent of their class or earn an ACT or SAT score within the top 20th percentile.
Columbus East grad receives scholarship
Matthew Furnish, of Columbus, is the recipient of a scholarship from the American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation.
The foundation’s scholarship program is awarded annually to outstanding students who intend to enroll at an accredited college, university or vocational-technical school. Recipients are selected competitively based on their academics records and personal achievements.
Furnish is a graduate of Columbus East High School and plans to attend the University of Louisville.
Local scholars graduate from DePauw University
Seven local students were among 561 graduating students to receive degrees at DePauw University’s 178th commencement May 21. They were:

Columbus resident earns dental surgery doctorate
Bria Scott, of Columbus, was among the 196 students to graduate the IU School of Dentistry on May 13.
Scott earned her doctor of dental surgery degree.
Local student earns dean’s list distinction
Jon Austin Huffer of Columbus recently was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Hope College in Holland, Michigan.
He is the son of Jon and Melinda Huffer of Columbus.
To make the dean’s list, students must have a 3.5 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
Vincennes University releases spring dean’s list
Two local students made the dean’s list at Vincennes University for the spring semester:

Katherine L. Miller, North Vernon
To qualify for the list, a student must complete at least 12 credit hours and achieve a grade-point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale.
Olivet University announces dean’s list
Three Columbus students were named to Olivet University’s dean’s list for the spring 2017 semester. They are:

Shelby Stamper
Taylor Stamper
Olivet’s main campus is in Bourbonnais, Illinois. To qualify for the dean’s list, a student must have been enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student and must have attained a semester grade point average of 3.50 or higher on a 4.0 grading scale.
Cedarville dean’s list includes local resident
Josh Felde, of Columbus, was named to the Cedarville (Ohio) University dean’s honor list for the 2017 spring semester.
Felde is a freshman majoring in mechanical engineering. He is the son of Steven and Linda Felde of Columbus.
3 from Columbus earn Manchester degrees
Three students from Columbus graduated May 21, from Manchester University. They are:

Local scholar named to IU Kokomo dean’s list
Micayla Anne Speidel, of Columbus, was one of 583 full-time Indiana University — Kokomo students to earn the dean’s list distinction for the spring semester.
Students had to earn a minimum 3.5 grade-point average on a scale of 4.0, while carrying at least 12 credit hours throughout the grading period, to make the dean’s list.

Trine dean’s, president’s lists
Paul Baker of Columbus, an exercise science major, was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Trine University’s main campus in Angola. A minimum of 15 hours and a grade-point average of 3.500-3.749 were required for the honor.
Caleb Barringer of Columbus, an applied management major, made the school’s dean’s list for the spring from the College of Graduate and Professional Studies. CGPS students needed a minimum of 12 hours and a grade-point average of 3.500-3.749 for the honor.
Danielle Kirchner of North Vernon, an exercise science-physical therapy interest major, made the spring semester president’s list from Trine’s main campus. Students at the main campus needed a minimum of 15 hours and a grade-point average of 3.750-4.000 for the honor.
Six local students from the College of Graduate and Professional Studies at Trine made the spring semester president’s list after achieving the requirements of a minimum of 12 hours and a grade-point average of 3.750-4.000. They were:
