Area track athletes named Academic All-State

Twelve Columbus North athletes are among the 19 local selections to this year’s Indiana Track and Cross Country Association Academic All-State boys and girls track teams.

Eleven of the selections — six boys and five girls — made the first team. The other eight — three boys and five girls — are honorable mention selections.

North is represented on the boys first team by Joel Carroll, Alec Embry, Evan Porter and Justin Spoon. They are joined by Hauser’s Joe Sweet and Pete Trotter.

Boys honorable mention picks include North’s Logan Abbott and Drew Thompson and Jennings County’s Isaiah Ertel.

North’s Jennifer Gutman and Ana Singhal made the girls first team. They are joined by Columbus East’s Lizzy Frazier and Cortney VanLiew and Hauser’s Grace Hasler.

Honorable mention selections for the girls are North’s Kirsten Ballard, Rachel Brougher, Kammy Salo and Maura Van Deventer and East’s Kayla Gastineau.

Olympians make All-HHC

Four members of the Hoosier Hills Conference girls tennis champion Columbus East squad have been named first-team All-HCC, and Matt Malinsky is the HHC Coach of the Year.

Sophomore Megna Chari and senior Adycin Rager made first team singles, and senior Kendall Gerkin and freshman Kathryn Hodzen made first team doubles. Senior Alaysha Pollert was named honorable mention singles.

East sophomore Julian Greenwell and seniors Jon Crawford and Luke Hostetler and Jennings County senior Tyler Vogel were named to the All-HHC baseball team. East’s Eric McMullen and Jennings’ Cody Wilson made honorable mention.

East senior Kaitlin Wagner and Jennings seniors Amanda Bonesteel, Mackenzie Byram and Sidney Gerkin are on the All-HHC softball team. East’s Mady Foster and Jennings’ Madi Skinner made honorable mention.

Sophomore wins tennis MVP

Chari has been selected as MVP of the Columbus East girls tennis team.

Hozden won the Mental Toughness Award, and Pollert won the Olympian Spirit Award. Rager was named Most Improved for varsity, and Kara Allen was selected Most Improved for junior varsity.

Senior named softball MVP

Kaitlin Wagner, Columbus East’s only senior starter, has been named MVP of the Olympians softball team.

Wagner and the team’s other senior, Jackie McCorkle, were recognized as being team captains.

North football to host outing

The Columbus North football team will host its Fourth Annual Golf For the Gridiron outing at 1 p.m. July 21 at Harrison Lake Country Club. Registration will begin at 11 a.m., and lunch will be at noon.

Cost is $100 per player or $400 per team and includes greens fees, cart, range balls, lunch, refreshments and the chance to win prizes. Sponsorships are available, ranging from $125 to $800.
