Brian’s Picks – August 10

1) When Chaotic Tuesdays began more than two years ago at The Commons downtown, I knew well the whimsy of late Swedish sculptor Jean Tinguely’s 2-ton piece that seems a bit like a joyful, oversized version of the game “Mouse Trap.” I was hardly as well-versed in the bright-eyed whimsy of today’s youngsters who, as much as anyone, love the kinetic piece that fully comes to clanking life again at a free gathering from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at 300 Washington St. Information: 812-376-2539 or artsincolumbus.org.

2) Actor and director Pete Law serves in both roles, which he has done frequently, in the Actors Studio of Hope production of “Playing Doctor” at 6 p.m. Aug. 18 to 20 and Aug. 25 to 27 at Willow Leaves of Hope, 326 Jackson St. The out-of-control story involved the proud parents of Rob Brewster. They are unaware that their boy has used their money earmarked for his medical school training to chase a career as a writer, which leads to trouble, to say the least. Dinner and the show combined are $25. Information and reservations: 812-546-0640.
