Two local residents were arrested on drug-related charges after Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies made a traffic stop for speeding.
Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Deputy Nate Nichols saw a vehicle traveling 68 mph in a 55 mph zone heading southbound on U.S. 31 near County Road 550N at 2:46 a.m. Wednesday, deputies said.
Nichols stopped the vehicle on U.S. 31 near Shady Lane and spoke with the driver identified as Ashley Shuffitt, 22, 1517 Chestnut St., and her passenger, Levi Underwood, 25, 625 National Road, deputies said. Nichols said he detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, deputies said.
Drugs and drug-related items were found inside the vehicle and additional drugs and drug-related items were found on Shuffitt after she was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail, deputies said.
Shuffitt was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and driving while suspended with a prior conviction, deputies said.
A small bag containing a white crystal substance, consistent with the look of methamphetamine, was found in Underwood’s wallet, deputies said. Underwood was arrested on a preliminary charge of possession of methamphetamine.
