Legal questions result in canceled auction

The Factory 12 Event Loft, 1235 Jackson St., has canceled a contract with a New Jersey auction firm after legal concerns arose over whether the organizers were complying with Indiana auction laws.

Many Columbus residents received a direct-mail flyer stating an auction was scheduled Sunday at Factory 12, with the event touted to include valuable assets available for sale due to a family dispute. But the event has been canceled for violation of the contract, said Caleb Blackerby, who manages the event center.

The space was booked for $1,000 for a rug show, Blackerby said, but Factory 12 officials then saw the flyer and questioned what the company was planning and whether it was following Indiana law by failing to provide an Indiana-licensed auctioneer and his license number on the flyer.

After doing some research, Blackerby said he learned similar issues had occurred in other locations, including Kokomo, and the event was canceled.
