Olympians sweep Panthers to open season
BLOOMINGTON — Columbus East put up 25 runs and 28 hits Saturday in opening the softball season with a doubleheader sweep at Bloomington South. The Olympians won 10-7 and 15-12.
Brooke Valles and Jordan Johnston combined on a five-hitter in the opener. Cassie Claycamp went 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs, and Valles went 2 for 3 with a home run. Jenna Robbins went 2 for 3, and Johnston went 2 for 4.
Robbins went 4 for 5 with a double, a home run and three RBIs, and Katelyn Orosco-Murphy went 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs in the second game. Kamryn Cantu went 3 for 4, winning pitcher Johnston went 2 for 3 and Becca Carter went 2 for 4. Mady Foster and Valles each added two RBIs.
Bull Dogs drop pair
TERRE HAUTE — Columbus North dropped Conference Indiana games to Terre Haute North 13-6 and Terre Haute South 12-2 in five innings.
Lilly Hurt went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Brooke Bruin went 3 for 4 in the first game for the Bull Dogs, who matched the Patriots with 14 hits. Sierra Norman went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Brittany Reichenba went 2 for 4 with a double and Catey Stteeval went 2 for 4.
North (0-3, 0-2) was held hitless in the second game until Norman singled in the fifth, and Bailey Lofton followed with a two-run homer.
Panthers sweep Indians
NORTH VERNON — Jennings County opened the season with a doubleheader sweep of Milan, winning 8-1 and 10-2.
Haley Engelking and Shelby Wilson combined on a two-hitter in the opener. Kylee Matern had three hits, Carissa Sablehaus had two hits and two RBIs, Engelking had two hits and Tori Lee had two RBIs for the Panthers.
Karlee Madinger was the winning pitcher in the second game. Lexi Brown had three hits, and Lee and Morgan King each had three RBIs.
TRACK AND FIELD
East boys, girls fall
BLOOMINGTON — Columbus East’s boys and girls opened the season with losses at Bloomington South. The Panthers won the boys meet 99-33 and the girls meet 114-18.
Mark McDonald won the long jump (20 feet, 5 1/2 inches), and Cody Horner took the 200 meters (25.01) seconds to lead the Olympian boys. Lance Griewe, McDonald, Horner and Crase Bergman captured the 4×100 relay (45.49).
The girls wins came from McKenna Downey in the pole vault (8-6) and Elena Stoughton in the high jump (5-0).
BASEBALL
Jets split with Hornets
HOPE — Hauser pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 4-3 win against Henryville in its season opener. The Hornets took the second game of the doubleheader 6-1.
Winning pitcher Cameron Lawson went 2 for 2 with a home run in the first game. Sam Meek went 2 for 3.
The Jets outhit Henryville 5-4 in the second game, but were plagued by five errors.
Eagles win, lose
GREENSBURG — Brown County pulled out an 18-17 win at North Decatur before falling to the Chargers 6-3 in a season-opening doubleheader.
J.T. Parry went 4 for 5 with a triple and two RBIs in the opener. Isaiah Luenebrink went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, Grant Suding went 2 for 6 with three RBIs, Isaac Weddle had three RBIs, and Jake Riehl added two RBIs. Justin Partyka picked up the win.
Weddle had two RBIs in the second game.
