Police: Drugs, paraphernalia found on local woman

A local woman was arrested after leading Columbus police officers on a foot chase on Columbus’ east side.

Columbus police officer Skylar Berry saw Penny N. Leonard, 39, of, 3056 Fairlawn Drive, leaving a gas station in the 400 block of Gladstone Avenue at 2:30 a.m. Friday, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Leonard started running away from the gas station and Berry pursued her on foot. Officers eventually caught her near CSA Fodrea school, which is at 2775 Illinois Ave., Harris said. Officers found three syringes, drug paraphernalia and heroin while searching Leonard’s purse after she was arrested on a Marion County warrant, Harris said.

Leonard also was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of heroin within 500 feet of a school, which is a Level 5 felony, possession of a legend drug injection device with a prior conviction, also a Level 5 felony, and resisting law enforcement and possession of drug paraphernalia, Harris said.

Leonard has since been transferred from the Bartholomew County Jail to another facility, jail officials said.
