Man arrested on drug-related charges after traffic stop

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a local man on drug-related charges after a traffic stop on U.S. 31 south of Interstate 65.

Sgt. Kris Weisner stopped a northbound Chevrolet Impala at 2:01 a.m. Wednesday for traffic and equipment violations, deputies said. As Weisner spoke with the driver, identified as Jose Alberto Espino-Salas, 21, of 3820 Camden Drive, the officer detected an odor of marijuana inside the vehicle, deputies said.

Espino-Salas told Weisner he had marijuana inside the vehicle, deputies said. Weisner also located a black backpack containing a green, leafy substance and drug-related paraphernalia when searching the vehicle, deputies said.

Espino-Salas was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia, deputies said.

He was being held in the Bartholomew County Jail in lieu of $6,000 bond, jail officials said.
