Columbus East had a chance to fine-tune a few things in its final track meet before next week’s Hoosier Hills Conference championships, and the Olympians came through with a pair of wins and plenty of personal records.
The Olympians swept Brown County, winning the boys meet 72-60 and the girls meet 82-50 on the warmest day so far in 2018.
“It was good to get a win,” East girls coach Glen Brown said. “We talked before the meet that it was going to be a good weather night and good competition, so we needed to go out and do the very best we could. We had lots of (personal records).”
The Eagle girls actually won nine events to seven for the Olympians, but East had more second- and third-place finishes. The Olympians’ victories came from McKenna Downey in the pole vault (8 feet, 6 inches), Elena Stoughton in the high jump (4-10), Adi Minor in the long jump (15-11), Caitlyn Lucas in the discus, Sydney Wilson in the 100 meters (12.8 seconds) and the 4×100 (52.9) and 4×400 (4:26.9) relay teams.

Brown County’s Kathleen McCann won the shot put (31-5, 400 (1:03.1) and 200 (26.4). Vivien Crimmins took the 100 hurdles (15.4) and 300 hurdles (42.1). Maris Wyman captured the 1,600 (6:14), Anna Fleetwood won the 800 (2:34.9), Emelia Koester took the 3,200 (12:46) and the Eagles captured the 4×800 relay (10:45).
“It’s one of our first meets where we’ve been able to have some really nice weather and get outside and compete,” Brown County girls coach Jay Myers said. “We put Kathleen in the shot put just as kind of a fill in because one of our throwers wasn’t going to be at the Talon Relays, and she’s done pretty well at it.”
Brown County’s boys won 10 events to East’s six, but like the girls, the Olympians had more depth. Cody Horner led the East boys with wins in the 100 (10.8) and 200 (23.0). Other winners for the Olympians were Crase Bergman in the long jump (20-4), Zach Clark in the shot (46-1 1/2), Harrison McNeely in the discus (127-4), and the 4×100 relay team (45.5).
“We finally got nice weather,” East boys coach Scott Pherson said. “Our sprints did pretty well, and our relay teams looked pretty good today. Long jump did well. Everybody did well. We’re gearing up for conference. We did awesome at the Seymour invite, and we did great today, so we just have to keep riding that winning streak and take it into conference and see what we can do.”
Dale Phelps won the 110 hurdles (15.9) and 300 hurdles (42.4) to lead the Eagle boys. Other Brown County winners were Evan Fleischman in the pole vault (9-6), Isaiah Keefauver in the high jump (6-2), Tim Kilburn in the 1,600 (5:00), Jackson McPheeters in the 400 (42.7), Wyatt Wyman in the 800 (1:58.6) and Marino Dolph in the 3,200 (10:23). The Eagles also took the 4×800 (8:39) and 4×400 (3:32.2) relays.
