Students to view strong message about prom safety

An Operation Safe Prom event is planned this morning at Columbus East High School to remind upperclassmen of making good choices during this weekend’s prom.

Columbus Mayor Jim Lienhoop will read a proclamation at about 9:20 a.m. followed by the event.

At about 9:30 a.m., Columbus police, firefighters, Columbus Regional Hospital ambulances, a LifeLine helicopter and other emergency responders will reenact an accident scene involving a fatality to remind prom-goers of the dangers of drinking and driving on prom night.

Emergency responders have been doing Operation Safe Prom since 1993, rotating it between East and Columbus North High School, so at least one of the years an upperclassman attends prom, the student will view a scene of a fatal accident caused by intoxicated driving.

In addition to the first responders, volunteers portray the accident victims and family members, who arrive at the scene to view what has happened and the portrayed death of one of the prom-goers.
