Columbus East to hold auditions

Central Middle School eighth-graders who will be attending Columbus East High School next year can audition for show choir, band and stage crew.

An informational meeting will be held at 3:30 p.m. today in the choir room at Columbus East. Auditions will be held today through Friday for East’s Center Stage Show Choir, Funk City Show Band and Center Stage Crew.

Frazier, Porter named Indiana Academic All-Stars

Two high school seniors who will be graduating in June as class valedictorians have been named as Indiana Academic All-Stars.

Lizzy Frazier, who attends Columbus East High School, and Evan Porter, who attends Columbus North, were among 40 students across the state to receive the designation from the program overseen by the Indiana Association of School Principals.

Ninety students who were named as Indiana Academic All-Stars or regional academic all-stars were recognized during a luncheon April 27 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in downtown Indianapolis.

Students earn awards in arts contest

Six students from Northside Middle School recently received awards during an Earth Week arts contest.

Coleen Davis earned second place in 3D art, while Kaylin DeHart earned third. Allison Griggs earned third place in the poetry category, while Dafne Duron, Zach Wagner and Jose Hernandez Melendres earned first, second and third, respectively, in Spanish.

They were recognized during an Earth Day ceremony held at The Commons on April 23.

Elementary school fitness run set for Saturday

An elementary school fitness run is planned Saturday at Mill Race Park.

The 10 a.m. event is open to all Bartholomew County elementary students and those in surrounding counties. Individuals who want to participate can register online at runcolumbus.org. 

The deadline for pre-registration is Thursday, while same-day registration is available at the event beginning at 9 a.m.

North senior awarded McDonald’s scholarship

A Columbus North High School senior has been awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana.

Blake Shaffer was among 20 high school seniors across Indiana who received the scholarship. He will be recognized at a ceremony Wednesday at the Ronald McDonald House in Indianapolis.

North student receives IT award

A Columbus North High School student has been honored for her interest in information technology and computing.

Emma Cooper received the Indiana Affiliate National Center for Women & Information Technology Award for Aspirations in Computing, which recognizes high school women for their computing-related achievements and interests as part of an effort to encourage more young women to choose careers in technology.

Cooper plans to pursue a degree in computer science to pursue a career in design and computer programming.
