Olympians blank Cougars

BLOOMINGTON — Alec Burnett and Cole Gilley combined on a four-hitter Wednesday to lead Columbus East to a 3-0 win at Bloomington South.

Burnett went 2 for 3 at the plate and allowed four hits over six innings in picking up the victory. Gilley threw a perfect seventh to earn the save.

Jonah Wichman went 2 for 4, and Josh Major had two RBIs for the Olympians (15-7). Dalton Back clubbed a solo homer.

Scottsburg tops Trinity

SCOTTSBURG — Scottsburg jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings Wednesday and went on to hand Trinity Lutheran a 5-0 loss.

The Cougars (14-9) were held to four hits.

BOYS GOLF

East downs Jeffersonville

JEFFERSONVILLE — Adrian Adams won medalist honors with 39 to lead Columbus East to a 167-176 win against Jeffersonville at Jeffersonville Elks.

Kody Reynolds and Avery Foist each shot 42 for the Olympians. Layton Erfmeier added a 44, and Cole Schafer had a 45.

Braves topple Eagles

TRAFALGAR — Parker VanNess won medalist honors with an even-par 36, but Brown County fell to Indian Creek 171-176 at Tameka Woods.

Curtis Lookebill carded a 43 for the Eagles. Ben Rygiel added a 47, Brendon Asher shot 50, Peyton Proctor had a 53, Rex Watters finished with a 65 and Jake Huddleston had a 70.

Jets claim title share

HOPE — Sydney Schoen went 3 for 4 with two triples, a home run Tuesday, and Class 4A No. 6 Hauser clinched at least a tie for the Mid-Hoosier Conference title with a 15-0, five-inning win against Morristown.

Lauryn Starnes went 3 for 4, Hannah Johnson and Zoee Nading each went 2 for 3 and Tessa Sims went 2 for 4 for the Jets (17-4, 11-1). Sims and Hunter Crain combined on a four-hitter.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Panthers win sectional

SEYMOUR — Jennings County won the Seymour Sectional on Tuesday, outscoring the host Owls 149 to 141 1/2 for their first sectional title since 1997.

Alexis Harsh led the Panthers with wins in the long jump (17 feet, 6 1/2 inches) and 200 meters (26.86 seconds). Kayla Truesdell took the discus (126-10), Izzy Daugherty captured the 400 (1:01.59) and Samantha Sproles, Alana Daeger, Daugherty and Harsh won the 4×100 relay (52.25).

Harsh also finished second in the 100 (13.00), and Truesdell also took second in the shot put (39-7 1/2). Emma McPeek was second in the high jump (5-4), Mariah Grider finished second in the discus (111-4) and Patricia Henney, Ashley Heindel, Baylee Byford, Emma Morrison took second in the 4×800 relay (10:54.37).

Also advancing to Tuesday’s Bloomington North Regional with third-place finishes were Grider in the shot (36-8 1/2), Byford in the 800 (2:35.27) and Kaylee Ebinger in the 3,200 (12:58.83).

Eagles take fifth

BLOOMINGTON — Brown County finished fifth with 44 points in Tuesday’s Bloomington North Sectional. Bloomington South won with 180.

The Eagles had two winners who advanced to the Bloomington North Regional. Vivien Crimmins took the 100 hurdles (15.78), and Kathleen McCann captured the 400 (1:00.82).

East, North get callbacks

Several athletes from Columbus East and Columbus North who finished outside of the three automatic qualifiers in each event from Tuesday’s Franklin Sectional have earned call-backs to the Shelbyville Regional.

East’s McKenna Downey in the pole vault and Whitney Poe in the high jump earned call-backs, along with the Olympians’ 4×800 relay team. They join East’s only automatic qualifier, Elena Stoughton in the high jump.

Earning call-backs for North are Marie Harrison in the discus, Sami Heathcote in the 100 hurdles, Mackenzie Barnett in the 1,600, Emma Smith in the 800, La’Monica Smith in the 200 and the Bull Dogs’ 4×100 relay team. They join automatic qualifiers Heathcote and Adrienne Salemme in the pole vault, Jahna Smiley in the high jump, Arig Tong in the 1,600, Olivia Morlok and Sydney Geckler in the 3,200 and North’s 4×800 and 4×400 relay teams.

Hauser’s Grace Hasler, who won the 300 hurdles, is getting a call-back in the 100 hurdles. The Jets also earned a call-back in the 4×100 relay.

Edinburgh’s Taylor Tatlock will get a call-back in the discus. South Decatur’s Lana Bell, who finished fourth in the high jump in the Franklin County Sectional, also is in line for a call-back to the Shelbyville Regional.
