Duke works on downtown power outage

Duke Energy has restored power to much of the downtown area after a piece of equipment malfunctioned and power went out at 10:18 a.m.

Power was restored to the majority of the downtown just before 11 a.m., said Chip Orben, Duke Energy spokesman. Power was rerouted around the substation that had the equipment failure and nearly all the 550 customers affected had power restored, he said.

Duke was working on restoring the rest of the customers this morning, he said. There are 23 customers now without power and Orben said Duke hopes to have their service restored in the next two hours. Any customer who has lost electricity is asked to call 800-343-3525.

Columbus police were out at intersections where downtown traffic lights were out directing traffic. Police asked motorists to be careful in the area as power is restored and the lights resume operation.
