Letter: Trump deserves praise, not criticism

This was intended to be simply a letter of praise and gratitude for President Trump. However, now I must also respond to Michael Greven’s letter criticizing the Trump administration policy of detaining adults who illegally enter our country, even if they are accompanied by minors.

He uses the words “lunacy” and “depraved mind” to describe those who have to make the difficult decision to separate parents from their children, a consequence of the process of enforcing immigration law. Those characterizations are rather offensive (I know liberals like that word). Of course, Mr. Greven elected to put quotation marks around the word law as if the law is not real. It is real, just as borders are real.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why those on the left blame the Trump administration for the separation of these families, but fail to recognize that it is the parents who make that fateful decision to bypass the proper channels and cross the border illegally. Mr. Greven states that the government is “forcibly separating” children and parents. On the other hand, he neglects to mention that the parents are forcibly entering our country. They are the ones who are putting the unity of their families at risk.

Slinging insults at President Trump, Vice President Pence, and Attorney General Sessions only weakens Mr. Greven’s position. We are a nation of laws, not emotions, but those laws mean nothing if they are not enforced. No one wants to see parents and children separated, but it happens every day when American citizens and legal residents are arrested for breaking laws. Illegal aliens cannot and should not be above the law. Put the blame for family separation where it belongs.

It is my firm belief that all Americans should be grateful that Donald Trump is president of the United States at this time in our history. Here are only a few of the actions he has taken and sentiments he has asserted, which have had a profound, positive impact on our nation:

  • Proudly exhibiting and defending American patriotism
  • Protecting religious freedom
  • Taking a stand against sanctuary cities
  • Resurrecting “peace through strength” with our adversaries
  • Fully supporting and strengthening our military
  • Having the backs of law enforcement
  • Strong border security policy and insistence on building a wall
  • Moving U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem
  • Record low unemployment
  • Tax cuts
  • Pulling out of Iran deal
  • Eliminating regulations
  • Addressing unfair trade practices
  • Crushing ISIS
  • Unleashing American energy resources
  • Jobs
  • Addressing high prescription drug costs
  • Advocating for veterans and the VA
  • Restoring American pride and confidence
  • Putting America first and making us great again
