Quick takes – June 16th

Great example

If you want an example of determination and competitive spirit, look no further than Hauser senior Tessa Sims, a pitcher on the softball team.

She overcame serious back and arm injuries to help the Jets to one state title, three regional titles and four sectional championships in her high school career.

Sims suffered a fractured back during her freshman year, but still pitched the Jets to the Class A state title. As a junior, she needed surgery to relieve pressure on the nerves in her shoulder, but she flourished as a senior to help the Jets to a regional title.

Her resiliency, which earned her the Josh Speidel Spirit Award at The Republic Sports Gala, provides a great example for others.

Good idea

The new FFA Alumni chapter is creating a booth and display for the Bartholomew County 4-H Fair that will have a focus on ag education, and be historical in nature.

The chapter is seeking donations of memorabilia and artifacts that represent judging teams, field trips and high school groups in Bartholomew County.

This is a great idea and should provide a neat, informative ag attraction that could also stir interest in potential FFA members. To donate items, contact Gene Wint at 812-579-6884, Tim McNealy at 812-371-9316 or Cory Arnholt at 812-350-0981.

What a weekend!

The weekend of June 9-10 was a big sports weekend for Columbus.

Columbus East’s girls doubles tennis team of Megna Chari and Kathryn Hodzen finished as the state runner-up, advancing to the final after defeating North’s duo of Madelyn Sanders and Eva Chevalier in the state semifinals. Additionally, North girls basketball coach Pat McKee coached the girls Indiana All-Star Team to an 83-70 victory June 10 over their Kentucky counterparts after suffering a loss in the annual series the day prior.

These were all notable accomplishments and ones that reflected well on the students, coach and the community.
