4 students receive scholarships

Four local students have been named recipients of a scholarship from the Tau Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International.

The chapter, which provides scholarships to students pursuing a teaching career, awarded $2,000 scholarships to Avery Todd, a recent graduate of Columbus Signature Academy — New Tech High School, and Kyla Foley, who recently graduated from Columbus North High School.

Todd plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Ivy Tech Community College and IUPUC, while Foley plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in secondary social studies education from Indiana Wesleyan University.

Scholarships were also awarded to IUPUC students Rory Bauman and Haylee Siegel of Milan. Bauman is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a concentration in math, while Siegel is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

Funds for the scholarship were provided to the chapter from the estate of Marjorie Hooten, who was an educator and administrator with the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp.

Fisher receives MBA

Brett Fisher, a 2000 graduate of Columbus North High School, received his Executive MBA (Masters of Business Administration) from The University of Notre Dame on May 19. He is vice president director of investment services at First Merchants Bank in Indiana and resides in Noblesville with his wife Nicci and twin sons.

National Merit Scholarship winner

A recent Columbus North High School graduate is the recipient of a National Merit Scholarship from Purdue University. Vamshi Balanaga was among 3,500 winners of National Merit scholarships that are paid by colleges and universities across the country.

The awards provide $500 to $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at institutions that finance the scholarships. Representatives of each sponsor college selected scholarship winners from among the finalists in the 2018 National Merit scholarship program who plan to attend their institution. Balanaga plans to enter a career in physics.

Belmont graduate

A Columbus resident has graduated from Belmont University.

Samantha Binnie, the daughter of Steve and Sally Binnie, graduated cum laude May 5 from the university with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.

Magna cum laude

Caroline Smith of Columbus graduated magna cum laude from Loyola University in Chicago on May 11.

She double-majored in political science and global international studies with a minor in studio art.

She was president of the International Studies Honor Society, and a member of the Political Science Honor Society. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, the student athletic council and a four-year letter winner in women’s golf.

She was awarded the Order of Omega and the distinguished international studies student.

Smith is pursuing a master’s degree in political science at Loyola and is working as an intern at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.

Named to dean’s lists

University of South Alabama: Lily Cross, Columbus.

LeTourneau University: Jonathan Clayton, Hartsville.
