A letter writer presented a list of what she claimed were President Trump accomplishments. In the interest of fairness, let’s look at those line by line, from the other end of the political spectrum.
Proudly exhibiting and defending American patriotism: Attacking the Constitutionally-protected right of free expression and institutions like a free press.
Protecting religious freedom: Allowing his attorney general to violate the separation of church and state, citing the Christian Bible, the verse that was used to defend cooperation with Nazis, to justify their despicable policy.
Taking a stand against sanctuary cities: Cities have reason to believe that keeping their law enforcement agencies from being tools of federal immigration enforcement serves their interest in local crime prevention.
Resurrecting “peace through strength” with our adversaries: By sucking up to dictators with entertaining movies and invitations into world councils that expelled bad actors for invading neighbors.
Fully supporting and strengthening our military: No, our armed forces are just as overstretched as they have been for 20 years.
Having the backs of law enforcement: See above, for another idea of what dragooning local police into his immigration Gestapo does to local law enforcement.
Strong border security policy and insistence on building a wall: Immigrants from the South fill jobs that native-born citizens seem unwilling to do. They pay all of the taxes; some just don’t get to file for refunds or collect the pension.
Moving U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem: Destroying any credibility the United States had as an honest broker between the parties there.
Record low unemployment: Continuing a trend set in the previous administration, including the trend of no wage growth.
Tax cuts: That benefit only the wealthy and, like the Reagan days, never trickle down to working people. The scam is that businesses do not invest because they have money. Investment happens when demand requires more capacity. The path to growth is putting money in the hands of people who will spend it.
Pulling out of Iran deal: Every other party considers it a success because Iran stopped making material that could go into bombs.
Eliminating regulations: Literally taking health care away from millions.
Addressing unfair trade practices: By starting a tit-for-tat trade war that will increase the cost of consumer goods.
Crushing ISIS: Actually, the Iraqis did this.
Unleashing American energy resources: Users get more useful energy out of a pound of natural gas than a pound of coal. That’s why coal-fired power plants are closing; nothing to do with regulations.
Jobs: No double dipping; the writer used “unemployment.”
Addressing high prescription drug costs: No, he didn’t.
Advocating for veterans and the VA: Trump wants to shift care away from the VA to private markets. Veterans’ groups are skeptical.
Restoring American pride and confidence: I’m not proud of him.
Putting America first and making us great again: America isolated from world affairs is not “first.” That historic allies don’t trust us and historic adversaries don’t respect us anymore is not “great.”
