A local volunteer received an award from the state for her service to the Columbus community.
Peggy Wampler was honored at the Indiana Statehouse Thursday afternoon.
She was chosen as one of 21 recipients of the Golden Hoosier award, an honor for senior citizens statewide who remain involved in their communities through volunteer work.

She was accompanied to the ceremony by Kashmira Mehta, the Thrive Alliance volunteer coordinator who nominated her for the award, her two sons, Mark and John Wampler and her husband, Don Wampler.
Wampler said that she had a wonderful time at the ceremony.
“It is kind of nice to be recognized, even though you feel like there are other, more deserving, people. But I guess they aren’t as old as I am,” Wampler said, laughing.
The ceremony was also attended by Indiana Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch, who sponsors the awards program with the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration’s Division of Aging.
