Quick takes – June 30th

Quite a ride

The Girlfriend Ride reached its 10-year anniversary with the June 16 ride around rural northeast Bartholomew County. The event attracted 500 participants and raised $10,000.

This year the money is being donated to Columbus Bike Co-op, to increase cycling among women, and Dreamers-Seeds of Hope Grants, for community projects and programs focused on hunger, children and the community, the environment and volunteerism.

The popular event have proven it is good way to exercise and support local causes, and more than $200,000 raised in event’s history is a good indication of just that.

Successful relays

The recent Relay for Life events in Columbus and Hope attracted strong support for their missions of raising money and awareness for cancer research.

The Columbus event June 16 raised $95,000. Hope’s event June 2 raised $18,000. Both drew hundreds of supporters.

This is evidence that the cause hits home with local residents, who have shown generosity in supporting the cause.

Touching tribute

U.S. Army Sgt. Jonathon M. Hunter’s legacy will endure in Columbus, and a new mini park along the State Street corridor will help do that.

The city recently dedicated one of the mini parks that are part of State Street improvements in honor of Hunter, 23, who died Aug. 2, 2017 during a suicide bombing attack on a NATO convoy near Kandahar, Afghanistan.

This is a respectful idea, and a way to keep Hunter’s legacy alive in an area near where he went to high school, at Columbus East.
