Deputies ask motorists to slow down through I-65 work zones

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies are asking motorists to slow down through area construction zones after responding to multiple crashes in and around the Interstate 65 work south of Columbus.

At 11:43 p.m. Monday, deputies went to an accident on I-65 at the 59.5 mile marker south of Columbus, deputies said. The driver, identified as Angel Tucker, Columbus, was found lying near a vehicle in a ditch on the east side of the interstate, deputies said.

Tucker said she was driving north on the interstate when a semi went into her lane, deputies said. As she attempted to avoid the semi, she hit the end of a guardrail and rolled her vehicle into the ditch, deputies said. She crawled out the passenger side window and was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital for treatment.

Sheriff’s Maj. Chris Lane said deputies are responding to multiple crashes in and around the I-65 construction zone, including a couple Monday night. Construction workers doing repaving work on State road 46 west of Columbus have also called the sheriff’s department with concerns about speeding and aggressive driving in construction zones, Lane said.

“Statistics show it takes just one minute more to travel through a two-mile work zone at 45 mph instead of 65 mph,’ Lane said. “Speeding and aggressive driving is a major cause of work zone crashes.”
