Pauline Baker Horton, age 95, passed away on Thursday, July 5, 2018. She had been a resident of Palm Harbor, Florida for the past 14 years. She was formerly of Indianapolis.
Pauline was born September 7, 1922, in Buckhorn, Kentucky. She was the oldest of 10 children born to Rodney and Mollie (McIntosh) Baker, who preceded her in death.
Her husband, James Henry Horton, passed away September 24, 1986.
She was also preceded by her brothers Jesse Baker, Robert Lee Baker, Roland Baker, Billy Baker, Tom Baker and sister, Edna Lois Baker.
She is survived by her two sons, James (Ruthie) Horton of Winter Haven, Florida and Rodney (Janie) Horton of Palm Harbor, Florida; three grandchildren, Sharolyn Widrig, Ryan Horton and Kristie Horton Stoltzfus; and her great-granddaughter, Jenae Widrig. She is also survived by her sister, Lida Webster of North Vernon, and brothers, Luther (Joyce) Baker of Mooresville and Charles (Betty) Baker of Rock Hill, South Carolina. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
In her lifetime, as well as being generously devoted to her family, Pauline displayed many talents and interests.
Early in her life, she took on the role as family historian, keeping immaculate records of events in both written and photographic forms. Her set of family albums is extensive. Her written recollection of sporadic family events is full of detail, both heart-warming and amusing, sometimes poignant.
Her creative talents were varied and extensive. At home, Pauline could fill up a day (and tire the rest of us out) with her many interests and talents. She was a super organized homemaker and a genuine southern cook; ginger bread cookies, hand pies and butterscotch creme pies were family favorites.
She was an expert seamstress and a beautiful quilt maker, with many family members and friends as recipients. For several years, she painted and produced unique and varied ceramic pieces, most of them gifts to others.
When she wasn’t working or creating, Pauline loved to play. She enthusiastically enjoyed fishing, particularly with her two sons. She also adored playing board games, dominoes, doing puzzles and taking excursions with her grandchildren and great-granddaughter.
Pauline was amazingly productive in her lifetime, and her love for family had no bounds. She was feisty, funny, famously outspoken, and always had a laugh.
She was an extraordinary “ordinary” woman and will be sorely missed by her entire family.
Funeral services for Mrs. Horton will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday July 14, 2018, at the Tea Creek Baptist Church in Lovett, Indiana. Visitation will be on Friday July 13, 2018, from 4 until 8 p.m. at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Interment will follow at Vernon Cemetery in Vernon.
