Velma Lee Lyon Whittington Hopewell of Seymour, IN and Bartow, FL passed away on July 5, 2018.
Friends may call at Voss Funeral Service on Sunday, July 15 from 1 to 3 PM. Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 3 PM. Burial will be on Monday at 10 AM at Riverview Cemetery.
She was born on October 22, 1928 to Byron “Barney” and Grace (Hatton) Lyon. She married Robert Whittington on June 20, 1954 in Seymour and he preceded her in death on April 17, 2004. She married Samuel Hopewell on March 24, 2010, in Florida, and he survives.
Velma always had a bright and happy disposition and greeted everyone with a smile and a hug. She loved to travel and to spend time with her family and friends.
Throughout her life, she co-owned the Violet-Ray Laundry and the Cypress Service Station in Seymour. She worked previously at the G.C. Murphy Co. in downtown Seymour and many years for J.C. Penney and Co. in Seymour. Once she retired, she wintered in Lakeland, FL. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene all her life.
She is survived by her husband, Samuel Hopewell of Bartow, FL; stepchildren, Samuel W. (Danetta) Hopewell and Laurie Crews; sister, Betty Schmidt-Daniel of Lakeland; Nephew, Michael (Deborah) Schmidt; great-nieces, Jennifer (Michael) Price and Cheri (Brandon) Taylor.
