Driver arrested after traffic stop

Columbus police arrested a local man on drug-related charges after a traffic stop at 17th Street and Cottage Avenue.

Police stopped the vehicle at 9:40 p.m. Thursday after observing a lane-change violation and identified the driver as David M. Frank, 59, of 2007 Maple St., police said.

A police canine was brought to the scene and alerted to the odor of narcotics coming from the vehicle, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

When officers patted down Frank, they located a loaded handgun and heroin concealed in his clothing, Harris said.

Frank was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of heroin and possession of a handgun without a permit, Harris said.

Frank was being held in the Bartholomew County Jail in lieu of $62,500 bond, jail officials said.
