Brinegar wins gold, leads USA to world team title

Michael Brinegar won the 18-19-year-old 10K race on Friday to lead Team USA to the FINA World Junior Open Water team championship in Eilat, Israel.

The Columbus resident and Indiana University freshman was near the front of the race the entire way and settled in behind the leaders on the sixth and final lap. He made a strong kick over the final 300 meters to finish in 1 hour, 49 minutes, 55.5 seconds to edge Frenchman Enzo Roldan Munoz by two-tenths of a second.

On Saturday, Brinegar teamed with Erica Sullivan, Brennan Gravley and Kensey McMahon to finish second in the open mixed 4×1250-meter relay in 56:06.7. Team USA was in fourth place until Brinegar moved the Americans ahead of Italy and Hungary into second place behind France.

North graduate leads Aces in Evansville debut

Sydney Anderson made her University of Evansville golf debut Sunday and Monday and led the Aces to a tie for ninth in the Illinois State Intercollegiate.

Anderson, a senior from Columbus North who played the past three years at Ball State, tied for 14th individually with an 11-over-par 227 for 54 holes at D.A. Weibring Golf Course in Normal, Illinois. She carded back-to-back rounds of 76 on Sunday and shot 75 in Monday’s final round.

Team USA won the overall title with 130 points. France finished second with 116.
