Columbus has entered into an agreement with a landscape architectural firm to design and construct an extension of the city’s 27-mile People Trail.
The Columbus Board of Works on Tuesday approved a contract with Indianapolis-based Rundell Ernstberger Associates Inc. not to exceed $115,500 for the design and construction of the project.
The work will be focused along 17th Street from Noblitt Park to Donner Park and on 19th Street from Donner Park to Lincoln Park, said Dave Hayward, executive director of public works/city engineer.
Eighty percent of the cost for the contract with Rundell Ernstberger Associates Inc. is being paid through federal funding, with the remaining 20 percent paid by the city through its thoroughfare fund, Hayward said.
“Our goal is to accommodate vehicular traffic, bike traffic and pedestrian traffic within the existing right-of-way,” Hayward said.
Engineering work is expected to begin in the next few months, with construction beginning in mid-2020, he said.
The city has budgeted $200,000 for the project, but will likely have to increase that amount, Hayward said.
