Sale to benefit student scholarships
Ivy Tech Community College in Columbus is sponsoring an upscale garage sale known as Ivy Republic to help raise money for student scholarships.
The event will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday in the student commons at Poling Hall at the campus, 4475 Central Ave. Individuals who attend can purchase gently used professional and casual clothing and accessories for $1.
Ivy Republic is held twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. A silent auction will also be available that can be bid on by students, staff, faculty and the public with the proceeds also going toward Ivy Tech scholarships.
IUPUC science division has open house
An open house is planned Nov. 12 at IUPUC in the Division of Science to showcase the the 3-D printing lab and a renovated chemistry lab.
The open house is from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the school, 4601 Central Ave. Visitors will see live demonstrations of the 3-D printers and software. Students and faculty will be available to answer questions.
Tours of the chemistry lab will be offered and guests will be allowed to conduct basic experiments led by students and faculty.
The renovations to the chemistry lab, which occurred over the summer, were made possible through gifts from the Clarence E. and Inez R. Custer Foundation, and the Elizabeth Ruddick Nugent, and Walter C. Nugent Foundations.
The event is free and open to the public, but individuals are asked to RSVP by Nov. 11 by e-mailing Joan Poulsen, head of the Division of Science, at jpoulsen@iupuc.edu.
Ivy Tech to host Court of Appeals hearing
Ivy Tech Community College – Columbus will host an Indiana Court of Appeals hearing next week.
The 1 p.m. hearing, open to the public, will be Nov. 13 in the Columbus Learning Center auditorium, 4555 Central Ave., and is part of the court’s traveling "Appeals on Wheels" program.
The court will hear oral arguments in the case of Sebastian D. Durstock vs. the State of Indiana. Durstock is appealing his conviction of dealing in a narcotic drug, a Level 2 felony, and sentence of 17 and a half years in prison with two and a half years suspended to probation.
Following the hearing, the court will take questions about the law and the judiciary in general, but not the case that was heard.
Nominations sought for Folger award
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2019 Edna V. Folger Outstanding Teacher Award.
This annual award raises awareness about the immeasurable influence educators have on their students recognizes the image of educators as important community role models. Faurecia Emissions Control Technologies, the Community Education Coalition, and the IUPUC Center for Teaching and Learning sponsor the award.
Any full-time elementary or secondary school teacher or educator working in a public, private, or parochial school in Bartholomew County is eligible to receive the award. This includes classroom, special education, or special subject teachers; certified educators; counselors; and administrators.
Nomination instructions are available from the IUPUC Center for Teaching and Learning, the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation Administrative Offices, and in the main office of schools throughout Bartholomew County. Nomination forms also can be downloaded at iupuc.edu/ctl/folgeraward.
Any individual or group may nominate a classroom teacher or educator to receive this award. Nominations should include biographical information, reasons for nomination, letters of recommendation and support materials. The deadline for nominations is 4 p.m. on Jan. 18. The award will be presented at the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting.
