Holiday perks available for veterans, active military

Veterans and active duty military personnel will have the opportunity to enjoy some free perks on and around Veterans Day.

The Yellow Trail Museum in Hope, 644 Main St., will hold a luncheon for veterans and guests from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, museum manager Lizzie Flora said. The event is being held in conjunction with an 8:15 a.m. Veterans Day program Friday at the Hauser Jr.-Sr. High School main gymnasium.

Five Columbus restaurants have special offers for veterans, primarily on Sunday.

Texas Roadhouse is inviting veterans and active duty military personnel for a free lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the restaurant, 2508 25th St. Individuals will have their choice of one of 10 entrees from the restaurant’s Veterans Day menu with proof of service including a military or VA card or discharge papers.

Veterans and active duty military will also have their choice of one of eight entrees during a free meal being offered Sunday at Applebee’s, which has a location in Columbus, 1900 25th St., and a restaurant in Edinburgh at 11860 U.S. 31 North.

Veterans who stop in at Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, 3660 Jonathan Moore Pike, on Sunday will receive a free card granting them a free combo meal during their next visit.

Chipotle Mexican Grill will have a buy-one, get-one-free offer Sunday at its restaurant in Columbus, 2260 N. National Road. The promotion, which is valid on burritos, bowls, salads and taco orders, is available for all active duty military, reserves, National Guard, military spouses and retired military with a valid ID.

Red Lobster, 2000 25th St., is giving veterans and active duty military their choice of a free appetizer or dessert on Sunday and Monday. Guests will be required to show a valid military ID or proof of service to redeem the offer.

Additionally, free car washes will be available Sunday at Crew Carwash, 1525 N. National Road, for past and current service members from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The offer is good at all of the company’s 31 locations in Indiana with no military ID required.

A Veterans Day program in Columbus will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Bartholomew County Veterans Memorial near the Bartholomew County Courthouse, 234 Washington St.

The following governmental offices will close Monday in observance of Veterans Day.

  • Bartholomew County Courthouse, other county offices
  • Bartholomew County Solid Waste Management District office and the Bartholomew County/Columbus Recycling Center, 720 S. Mapleton St. 
  • Columbus City Hall
  • The Columbus City Utilities, although anyone with a problem with water or sewer service should call the business office at 812-372-8861 and follow the prompts.
  • All Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicle branches are closed Saturday and Monday. All branches resume regularly scheduled business hours on Tuesday.

Here are government services that are operating Monday:

  • The Bartholomew County Landfill, 811 E. County Road 450S, will be open regular hours, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday.
  • Columbus city trash, recycling, compost and brush collections are running on a normal schedule Monday, as is loose leaf collection. Toters should be out by 7 a.m. Monday.
