Woman accused of shoplifting with young child

Columbus police arrested a local woman who was accused of taking more than $2,000 worth of clothing while shopping with a child in a stroller.

Police were called to the 700 block of Creekview Drive at 5:40 p.m. Friday after a store security officer reported seeing the woman take clothing and merchandise, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Officers located the individual — identified as Katie L. King, 31, of 3632 Nicholas Lane — pushing a stroller along a nearby street with a young boy walking along side, Harris said.

Officers saw a large amount of clothing with the tags attached inside the stroller and later determined the recovered clothing’s value at $2,400. The store security office said employees recovered another $383 in clothing at the store that was damaged during the shoplifting incident, Harris said.

King was arrested on a preliminary charge of Level 6 felony theft, Harris said.

She was released from the Bartholomew County Jail under the county’s program of allowing certain offenders who qualify to be released from jail without posting bond, jail officials said.
