CSA New Tech students organize holiday bike ride

Staff Reports

Students at Columbus Signature Academy — New Tech High School have organized a holiday bike ride in Columbus to encourage people to get outdoors and socialize.

In its third year, the free event will begin at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday in Mill Race Park, science teacher Andrew Larson said.

The family-friendly event will take people on a 6-mile bike ride starting in the park, traveling down Jonathan Moore Pike on the People Trail before returning back to the park, Larson said. Participants are encouraged to decorate their bikes and dress in holiday-themed clothing, he said.

The annual event has brought 40 to 50 people the last two years, but organizers hope to double that figure this year by reaching out to students and families from CSA Lincoln and CSA Fodrea elementary schools.

Three CSA New Tech freshmen — Joshua Schrader, Grace Wolter and Shayla Hibbs — have been responsible for promoting the event by reaching out to businesses for sponsorships and advertising it on social media.

ColumBIKE will also have loaner bikes available for those who don’t have a bike of their own to use, said Veronica Buckler, a CSA New Tech English teacher. Goody bags and gift certificates will also be given away during the event. Free hot chocolate will be provided to bicyclists.

“It’s a great way to get outside and exercise,” Wolter said.
